BOTTLENECK SLIDE GUITAR (Intermediate & Above) Mike Dowling
Explorations for slide in D & G tunings. Students will learn fretted chord shapes, turnarounds and other techniques that will get you started playing comfortably in these time-honored tunings. Mike uses the bottleneck to add texture and color to traditional Piedmont-style melodies as well as his own slide-based compositions. Handouts provided, audio recorders encouraged, no video cameras please. Level: intermediate and above.
BOSSA NOVA & SAMBA - John Miller
In this two-part workshop, you’ll learn a variety of right hand rhythm patterns that will equip you to accompany bossas and sambas, and will learn a couple of songs that you can plug these patterns into and practice building your skills in these irresistible Brazilian styles.
IDENTIFYING POSITION/TUNING BY EAR – John Miller
This ongoing workshop will teach you how to tell what position or tuning your Country Blues favorites were played in, working strictly by ear. You’ll learn how to differentiate between the different positions and tunings, independent of the pitch at which they are played. Developing this skill will enable you to figure out songs for which there is no published TAB available on your own, working by ear. This is a learned and learnable skill, not an innate one. Come see how it is done!
BEATLES! - Shawn Persinger
A broad but focused examination of The Beatles music with the emphasis on guitar parts but also with an understanding of vocal arrangements, orchestration of songs, performance gear/equipment, songwriting approaches and historical context. Students will learn and perform guitar parts as well as vocal lines (either as vocalists or as instrumentalist, whichever is preferred) with explanations of harmonic and melodic relationships. Shawn approaches his detailed understanding of The Beatles music both as an intellectual scholar as well as an avid fan. Students of all levels will surely gain insight into the music of arguably the most influential group of the 20th century. Preparatory information available upon request.
